Breed Overview Information :

Teddy Roosevelt gave name to the Rat Terrier breed. It is a cross breed of the Smooth Fox Terriers and the Manchester Terriers and originated in Great Britain in 1820. They became popular in United States when they were brought there in the 1890’s. In America, the breeders crossed three different breeds such as the Beagle, Small Fox Terrier, and the Whippet to maintain some of the characteristics that they liked about these animals. The Beagle has its hunting instincts, is bulky and has a red color. On the other hand, the Whippet is very agile and fast and has blue and brindle colors.

Breed Character Information :

The Rat Terrier is a dog breed that is very courageous. It fears nothing regardless of its size. It possesses the real colors of a terrier. However, they are sometimes stubborn and naughty. They also display their destructive attitude when not handled very well. In this sense, the owners should not belong in an average family so that they can focus on taking care of this puppy. This dog breed usually loves going around the place.

Breed Coat Information :Lying very close to the body of the Rat Terrier, its short coat is very firm, glossy and also harsh to touch. Minimal grooming is necessary but not a big deal to the owners.

The Rat Terrier is somehow difficult to train because of heir stubbornness. In this case, the trainer has to be experienced so that they can produce the best out of the breed. They should be given enough attention.
