Breed Overview Information :  The Mexican Hairless Dog also known as Xoloitzcuintli is considered as one of the rarest and oldest breeds in the world. It originated in Mexico more than 3,000 tears ago. The Aztecs believed that they were needed to guide their souls safely to the underworld and thus, were considered sacred. They were also believed to possess magical powers and healing abilities. They were also raised and bred as food for the Aztecs. It nearly became extinct several years back but fortunately, its numbers have improved.
Breed Character Information : The Mexican Hairless Dog is very loyal and loving. However, it usually develops a strong bond with the person who rears it. So, it is imperative that all family members play a part. Like other dog breeds, it is very protective of its family. It is very wary of strangers and may bark excessively or bite if necessary. Mexican Hairless Dogs are very sensitive and will retaliate when punished or hit. Leaving it alone for long time periods is highly discouraged to prevent behavioral problems.
Breed Coat Information :  A purebred Mexican Hairless usually has a dark coat. This breed has two kinds: Hairless and Coated. The Hairless kind, as the name connotes is hairless all throughout with only small tufts of hair in its tail and head. The Coated on the other hand has hair all over its body which is short and smooth. This breed is perfect for those with asthma and allergies because they do not shed unlike other dog breeds.
Breed Temperament Information :  The Mexican Hairless Dog is a very protective breed. It will bite or bark when needed to protect its family. It can socialize well with people and other animals it has been raised with as a puppy. The Mexican Hairless Dog is quite dominant so its owner must be firm and consistent in training it. It does not usually wander off; instead, it likes to tag along with its owner. It tends to become disruptive when left alone or ignored for a long time period. Also, it will most likely retaliate when hit or punished.
Breed Ownership Information :The Mexican Hairless Dog is not suited for first time owners. It does best in families with older, more mature children than with toddlers or infants. Breed Activity Information :   This breed does not require much exercise. However, to prevent any disruptive behavior from developing, it is best to give it daily walks. If you’re planning to bring it outdoors, make sure that the temperature is not too cold since unlike other dog breeds, the Mexican Hairless has little or no hair to protect it.
Breed Care Information :

The Mexican Hairless Dog does best in warm climates. It should only be given a bath when needed since excessive bathing may result to skin problems.
