| Breed Overview Information : | Mastiffs were originally utilized as guard dogs. They were owned by aristocrats and nobility as hunting aides while regular citizens used the, to protect their livestock. They were also made to fight with other animals in an arena. They may be quite intimidating due to their mass and size. However, in spite of their large size, they are very gentle, often referred to as the Gentle Giant. Like other dog breeds, they are very protective of their family and owners. This breed nearly became extinct but their numbers were saved thanks to imports from neighboring countries. |
| Breed Character Information : | Mastiffs are very brave and powerful which makes them excellent guard dogs. They will bark or bite when necessary to protect their owners. They are very loyal and develop strong attachments to their owners. They cannot socialize well with other animals that they haven’t been raised with as a puppy. It is very gentle and affectionate to children. However, toddlers or infants should not be left alone with them due to their large size. Mastiffs are quite difficult to train so even as a puppy they should already be given exercises and activities to do. It also has a tendency to drool excessively and snore loudly. |
