Breed Overview Information :  The Maremma Sheepdog originated in Italy and was utilized as a guardian of sheep and property. Nowadays, they are still utilized as such in Italy, providing help to shepherds who allow their sheep to graze on an open field. They can ward off wolves and even slay them. They are also utilized as sheep guardians in the United States and Australia.
Breed Character Information : Maremma sheepdogs are very brave and protective. Thus, they are highly effective in guarding sheep. They can even slay or ward off wolves despite their size which is smaller than other sheep dogs. They will do anything to protect their owners. They are affectionate but they do not develop a strong attachment to their owners. They will also not follow your every command since they are headstrong and independent. It can easily get along with other dog breeds. However, they are slightly wary of strangers.
Breed Coat Information :  The Maremma Sheepdog’s coat usually comes in yellow, orange or ivory. It has a double coat which protects it from harsh weather. The outer coat is long and thick while the undercoat is soft and smooth. This breed is not recommended for asthma sufferers or those with allergies since they shed heavily two times in a year.
Breed Temperament Information :  As mentioned above, the Maremma sheepdog is very headstrong and independent. It will not follow your every command unless they understand the purpose of doing so. They are also very protective of their family probably due to their original purpose as sheep guardians. Despite their large size, Maremma Sheepdogs are very affectionate and gentle with children. However, unlike other dog breeds, it does not develop a very strong attachment to its owner. They provide excellent companionship but are not that easy-going unlike other dog breeds.
Breed Ownership Information : Before buying Maremma Sheepdogs, make sure that you have a large open space since they do no do well in cramped spaces. Also, be sure that you do not have any allergies or that you do not suffer from asthma since this breed sheds a lot of hair. Breed Activity Information :  The Maremma sheepdog must have a job or activity to do since keeping them idle will result to behavioral problems. If you do not plan to utilize them as sheep guardians, then, give them daily walks in the park or any open space. Also, give it ample time to run freely without a leash. 
Breed Care Information :Maremma Sheepdogs are not suited for countries or places with warm climates due to their double coat. In addition, they should not be housed in cramped spaces since they do best in open fields. Their coat should also be brushed regularly to remove loose hair.  
Breed Training Information :  Training for a Maremma Sheepdog should start even when it is just a puppy. It should be trained in a gentle manner for it to respond well. They should also be given obedience training as well as time to socialize with other dog breeds.
