Breed Overview Information :  The Machester Terrier or “Rat Terrier” was utilized as a rat or vermin hunter during the 19th century by John Hulme from Manchester, England. The Manchester Terrier is referred to as one of the best vermin hunters in the world. There were even rumors that Billy, a Manchester terrier was able to kill 100 rats in less than 10 minutes. It comes in two kinds: standard and toy. The toy type Manchester terrier was highly popular during the reign of Queen Victoria in England when small dogs were favored. Today, the Manchester’s terrier’s popularity has decreased although they still serve as great companions and rat hunters.
Breed Character Information :  Manchester terriers are extremely loyal to their owners. It is better to put them in a home with no other dog breeds since they may be quite aggressive. Leaving them alone for a long period of time is highly discouraged since they may develop a disruptive behavior. The Manchester terrier unlike other dog breeds is very easy to train. They excel in agility exercises as well as obedience trainings. Although they love to be around people, it is better not to leave infants or toddlers with Manchester Terriers due to their aggressive nature.
Breed Coat Information :  The standard Manchester terrier sheds little hair while the toy type sheds no hair at all. Its short, glossy coat comes in black and tan. This breed is perfect for those with asthma.
Breed Temperament Information :  The Manchester Terrier tends to be aggressive and combative. They do not socialize well with other dog breeds. They demand a lot of attention from their owners but they provide excellent companionship. If left alone for a very long time, the Manchester terrier may become destructive. When not given firm training, it may also develop behavioral problems. It should be allowed to socialize with children and other animals as a puppy so as to lessen its aggression.

Make sure that you do not have small children at home since they may be quite aggressive when ignored or left alone. Breed Activity Information :  Manchester terriers require lots of exercise to prevent them from becoming idle. They love daily walks with their owners and enjoy running without a leash. However, make sure that you do not let the Manchester terrier run freely in an open space since it has a tendency to chase after strangers.

The Manchester terrier is easy to care for. Its short, glossy coat requires little grooming. However, make sure that they get regular checks ups since they tend to develop glaucoma and Von Willebrands disease. The Manchester terrier does best in warm climates but they cannot be exposed to the sun for a very long time.  

Breed Training Information :  Firm training is needed to lessen this breed’s aggression. However, they learn best with harsh training. Instead, they respond better to firm training with prizes and praises. It is necessary to allow them to meet other animals and people at a very young age.
