Breed Overview Information : A Maltese is a small, white, toy dog that originated in Europe. They are one of the oldest toy breeds in the world. Maltese were mostly owned by aristocrats and nobles. Though it serves as a perfect family pet, it is highly discouraged that an infant or a toddler be left alone with it. This is due to the Maltese’s very playful nature which might cause harm to infants or toddlers. The Maltese is very attached to its owners. They are very protective of their family; they are ready to bark or bite when they perceive a threat.
Breed Character Information :The Maltese is a very gentle and affectionate breed. They love to receive cuddles and pats from their owners. They can socialize well with people and other dog breeds. However, they can not tolerate those that behave awfully towards them because these small dogs are highly sensitive. The Maltese is a small dog with a high energy level. They are also very brave despite their small size. Larger dog breeds do not seem to intimidate them in any way.
Breed Coat Information :  A Maltese’s coat is usually white. However, there are some that come in off white though these are not really preferred by most buyers. Their coat is long and silky and can extend up to its feet. These small dogs are perfect for those with asthma since their coat sheds little.
Breed Temperament Information : As mentioned above, the Maltese is a very protective breed. They will bark and bite if needed when they perceive a threat. They also retaliate and will mostly become aggressive when ill treated. They are a very sensitive and affectionate breed, always wanting to be cuddled and patted by their owner. They love to feel that they are members of the family. They dislike being left alone for a long period of time. These small dos are quite difficult to housebreak. So, it is highly recommended that you train it consistently as a puppy. Also, Maltese, though very affectionate even to small children may be harmful to the latter. They may mistake infants or toddlers for small animal playmates. However, as it grows older, the Maltese matures and thus, may be less playful.

Breed Activity Information :

 Maltese do not need too much exercise. However, it is imperative that you take them on daily walks and allow them to run freely in an open space. Doing so will ensure that your Maltese does not develop any aggression or behavioral problems.

Breed Care Information :It is highly recommended that you refrain from feeding your Maltese with snacks that have food coloring. Also, make sure to give them clean water. Doing so will help reduce the tearing or wetness of their eyes. Tear stains may cause the Maltese to develop red stains around its eyes. .
Breed Training Information :Maltese should already be trained as a puppy since they are quite difficult to housebreak. They also need to be given ample time to socialize at a very young age.
