They are well renowned for their natural hunting and herding abilities. Today, they are no longer utilized as hunters or herders; instead, they now make excellent companions. This breed was already in existence before other dog breeds of Japanese origin appeared. Breed Character Information :

The Kishu Ken possesses impressive strength and endurance in its medium-sized body. It is a great hunter and herder since it can withstand all types of weather and terrain. Kishu Kens may show aggression towards other animals. Thus, it is not suited for households with small dogs and other animals unless given ample time to socialize as a puppy. They develop a strong bond to one person only but may be affectionate to people it has been raised with as a puppy.

Breed Coat Information :

The Kishu Ken has a white double coat which protects it from all types of weather. Its outer coat is straight and harsh to the touch while the under coat is soft and dense. This breed is not recommended for asthma sufferers since it sheds heavily two times a year.
