| Breed Overview Information : | The Karelian Bear Dog originated in Karelia, an area in northern Europe. This dog breed has been used in Finland, Sweden and Norway by elk hunters. However, its numbers greatly neared the point of extinction after World War 2. Fortunately, its numbers improved thanks to 40 Karelian Bear Dogs found after the war. Now, its popularity is steadily increasing in other parts of the world as a hunting companion. It can catch wild boar, hare, elk and other wild animals. They make excellent hunting companions because they can pass through any kind of terrain and can survive in harsh weather. |
| Breed Character Information : | The Karelian Bear Dog develops a strong loyalty to its owner when trained properly. It is not bred solely as a pet since it is a natural hunter. Most owners of Karelian Bear Dogs use this breed to hunt game since they are very agile and intelligent.
