Breed Overview Information :

The Jindo originated in Jindo, an island in Southwest Korea. They were originally utilized as hunters of rabbits, deer, boars and the like. It is considered as a national monument in Korea and is heavily covered and protected by Korean law. It started appearing in the United States only in the 1980’s. However, it is still rare in most countries since Korean laws restrict their exportation.

Breed Character Information :

The Jindo is a medium sized dog that is independent and very courageous. Because they are very headstrong, they are not recommended for first time dog owners or inexperienced trainers unlike other dog breeds. They are quite protective of their family and property. They are very affectionate to those who have managed to gain their trust but are wary of strangers. They may be quite aggressive to other animals probably in order to gain dominance. Because they are natural hunters, they are not recommended to be left alone with small dogs and other small animals such as hamsters and rabbits.

Breed Coat Information :

The Jindo has a double coat which protects it from hash weather. Its coat usually comes in white, red, tan, yellow and black. The outer coat is straight and harsh while the under coat is soft and dense. This breed is not recommended for asthma sufferers or those with allergy to dogs since they shed heavily twice a year.

Breed Temperament Information :

Jindos are very strong willed and independent which make them unsuited for first time dog owners. They are excellent guard dogs and will not hesitate to attack or fight to the death if necessary to protect its family and property. They are quite dominant with other dog breeds so they should already be trained as a puppy on how to socialize well with other animals. Again, due to their hunting instincts, they are not recommended to be left alone with small dogs and other small animals. It is best not to keep them bored or idle for a very long time since they have a tendency to be quite destructive.

Breed Ownership Information :

Jindos are relatively rare and hard to obtain in most countries since they are heavily protected by Korean laws. However, if you are lucky enough to have obtained one, it is best to read on Jindo dog breed information’s in order to have even a slight idea on its personality. If you have allergies to dogs, then, this is not the right breed for you since it sheds heavily.

Breed Activity Information :

Jindos should be given daily walks and occasional runs to keep it from becoming bored and idle. However, make sure that it is inside a fenced area or it has a leash since it may be quite aggressive and hard to control.

Breed Care Information :

The Jindo is a relatively healthy breed. However, since it is a heavy shedder, its coat needs to be brushed regularly to remove loose hair.

Breed Training Information :

The Jindo should already be trained as a puppy. I should also be given ample time to socialize with people and other animals to lessen its aggression. When training a Jindo, it is best to be gentle and consistent rather than hitting or punishing it since it tends to retaliate.
