Breed Overview Information :

The very first German Wirehaired Pointer puppy, according to the German Wirehaired Pointer Dog Breed information’s, was introduced on the onset of the 20th century in Germany.  This breed is an all purpose hunter, able to work in any terrain type.  The German Wirehaired Pointer is unique among the dog breeds because they display a combination of the skills/qualities of a retriever, a spaniel,a and a pointer, just like its counter part, the German Shorthaired Pointer.  It is definitely not a “small dogs” family member because of its medium body size.   

Breed Character Information :German Wirehaired Pointers are muscular and built sturdily giving it great strength and versatility.  These dogs are loyal and very alert, making them good hunting dog breeds. The German Wirehaired Pointer has an attentive as well as lively facial expression.
Breed Coat Information :  

The German Wirehaired Pointer puppy has a coarse, straight and wiry coat that is said to be weather resistant.  Its under coat is thick and the coat characteristics makes it a water repellant as well as a protection from brambles.  The coat colors may either be primarily white or liver that may be ticked or spotted.  The German Wirehaired Pointer is only a moderate shedder.

Breed Temperament Information :

Breed Ownership Information :

German Wirehaired pointers are active dogs and that means that they are best left to the hands of active owners.  If you have an apartment or a condominium as your place of residence, then this dog is not right for you as they require a large yard or space for them to do activities.  In terms of grooming costs, this breed is an average shedder so grooming is not that difficult.

Breed Activity Information : 

The German Wirehaired Pointer is full of energy and is very active that it needs consistent exercise or activities that are vigorous such as running, hunting, swimming, etc.  They tend to be high strung if kept indoors for a long time.  Its running area should also be large in size and of course, fenced. 

Breed Care Information : 

In caring for your German Wirehaired Pointer, brushing of the coat only needs to be done at least twice a week, with its coat hairs not required to be clipped.  Bathing should only be done on an as needed basis.  As for thinning, both seasons: fall and spring should be the time for thinning.  The German Wirehaired Pointer sheds its coat hairs during the spring.  The ears should also be given regular attention, meaning checking and cleaning of the ears should be done consistently.

Breed Training Information : 

German Wirehaired Pointers are required to take basic obedience training classes and should also be socialized in the early years not only with dogs but also with humans.  They love learning or training but should be trained firmly.
