The German Shepherd is not the advisable breed for the newbie owner or sedentary owner.   

Breed Activity Information : 

A German Shepherd wants a lot of activity for it not to be bored.  What will really make this breed happy would be to engage in agility and obedience games and also do tracking activities.  If this dog gets bored it will chew furniture, dig up your garden, etc.

Breed Care Information : 

The German Shepherd loves being outdoors but will still be ok staying indoors as long as it gets enough exercise.  You may want to find some dog house plans for large dogs to build a dog house that a German Shepherd can fit in. Inside an apartment or a house it will not be that active but would do its thing in the back yard.  As for grooming, this dog is a constant shedder so a quick brushing done everyday is a requirement.  It doesn’t need frequent bathing, in fact bathing it a couple of times a year is sufficient.

Breed Training Information : 

The German Shepherd is in need of obedience training as well as serious socialization in the early stage.  They are wary of heavy handed methods.  Training however should be firm and consistent as well as rewarding your German Shepherd for any good behavior exhibited.  They are quick learners and are especially good in agility, tracking, obedience, ring sport, etc.
