Building an Extra Large Dog House

Very few people keep a large dog in their house. There may be some who even keep a Great Dane or a Saint Bernard in their home, but not very many. To keep these dogs outdoors, it is best to build a dog house, especially if you live in an area where weather is extreme. Building an extra large dog house is like building a small shed. It’s true that larger dogs can normally do better in very cold environments than very small dogs can, but all dogs need protection when severe weather is present.

You may have some trouble trying to locate dog house plans for how to build a dog house step by step. Most people need detailed information on how to do this kind of a project. When looking for plans, I have learned that it is best to look for some plans that aren’t very expensive, but not the free ones. It seems that most of the free plans are so abbreviated that you don’t get enough information to complete the project, unless you are an experienced carpenter.

When deciding how large a dog house should be, first measure your dog. The two things to measure are their length and their height. The key is to build your doghouse large enough for your dog to be comfortable, but small enough for its body heat to keep its home warmer in the winter. A good rule of thumb is to make the length of the doghouse 1 ½ times the length of the dog and the width ¾ the length of your dog. The height should be approximately 1 ¼ to 1 ½ the height of your dog. It’s always best when building an extra large dog house to use some dog house plans for large dogs. You also have the option of looking for a large dog house sale and buying a dog house, however, the quality of one you contruct yourself will be superior and you will save money.
