Breed Overview Information :  The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French dog breeds. The Dogue de Bordeaux is a dog breed that is strong, powerful, and imposing. He is a typical brachycephalic molossoid type. He is a very powerful dog, with a very muscular body yet retaining a harmonious temperament. The breed has been utilized in many different forms, from using their brawn to pull carts or haul heavy objects, to guarding flocks and used to protect castles of the European elite. Sometimes called the French Mastiff, the Bordeaux Mastiff, the Bordeaux Bulldog, or the Bordeaux Dog and known in his homeland (France) as Dogue de Bordeaux, this breed was originally used for cattle-droving, big game hunting and property guarding.
Breed Character Information :  This is a highly intelligent dog breed that sometimes tends to be stubborn, but at the same time has an excellent memory. Once he learns a command, he never forgets it. Dogues get along with other family pets and, if introduced early as a puppy, can be friendly with cats, birds and other large and small dogs. Having another male Dogue can present a problem because of the dominant personality of Dogues in general. Dogue de Bordeaux is gifted for guarding, which he assumes with vigilance and great courage but without aggressiveness. He is a very good companion, being attached to and affectionate toward his master and family. He is calm and balanced with a high stimulus threshold. The Dogue de Bordeaux is also known commonly as the French Mastiff.
Breed Coat Information :  The short soft coat comes in shades of fawn to mahogany with a black or red mask. White markings are allowed on the tips of the toes and on the chest, but white markings on any other part of the body are a fault. The dogue is a short coated breed, and therefore the coat does not require a lot of attention.
Breed Temperament Information :  The Dogue has an even temperament, and is extremely loyal and devoted to his master and family. An extremely cooperative, intelligent and fearless giant, he can never be intimidated and makes an outstanding guardian. With his family he is invariably affectionate, loyal and docile even as a puppy. Breeders have softened the temperament of this dog quite a bit from his original ferocity. Fearless and confrontational with strangers, he is a first class watch and guard dog. Since one of the original purposes of this dog breed was to protect, the Dogue is dog-aggressive by nature, will back down in fight and needs to be supervised closely in the presence of other large or small dogs.

Breed Activity Information :   The Dogue De Bordeaux requires quite a bit of exercise, and would do best with a relatively active owner. This dog breed needs to be taken on a daily, long walk. A large yard is suggested when considering this breed and long walks would do great. However, the short muzzle can cause this breed to tire out quickly so proper water should always be available.
Breed Care Information :The Dogue de Bordeaux is not an easy dog to breed. Litters are generally small. Cesarean sections are often needed at birth because of the puppies extremely large heads. The dams are so broad chested that they often lie on their stomachs to nurse their pups, sometimes squashing them. Breeders must watch out vigilantly for the pups or some will probably be lost. Females can be very protective of their puppies.
Breed Training Information :  The Dogue De Bordeaux has average intelligence, yet is very loyal and obedient and eager to please his owner. This dog breed requires a dominant trainer to avoid any problems as this is a fearless, large, and courageous breed. This not so small dog also does well in obedience, working, and watch dog sports.
