Breed Overview Information :

Dachshunds are elongated in appearance and are one of the so called hound dog breeds.  Their main use before was in badger hunting/tracking.  Because of their long and narrow structure, dachshunds are small dogs that are referred to as “hot dogs” or “wiener dogs.”

Breed Character Information : The Dachshund puppy has the love of digging as well as chasing after birds and other smaller animals in the garden.  It has a very loud bark and that is why it is considered as a good watchdog as mentioned in the Dachshund Breed information’s.  Dachshunds are also described as devoted to their masters but with strangers, they are quite cold.
Breed Coat Information :

The Dachshund has three different types of coat: long coat, smooth haired, and the wire haired, with the smooth haired variation being the most common.  The wire haired dachshunds on the other hand are not that known, meaning, when people see this type, they wouldn’t expect that it is a type of Dachshund.

As for the coat colors, Dachshund Breed information’s tells us that Dachshunds have a lot of different patterns and colors.  Some only have one coat color, while others have two coat colors, and the third kind has a dappled coat.  The color that is more common or dominant also in patterns would be cream and shades of red.
Breed Temperament Information :

A Dachshund has a number of dispositions. There are many that would growl because they dislike strangers.  There are some Dachshunds that have great energy.  Because of the fact that its behavior varies, it will not be a suitable pet for all people.

Dachshunds, when lonely or bored would destroy things around the house through chewing because that is the way they relieve themselves.  Proper training is required because these small dogs if not raised in the right way would either be cowardly or too aggressive.  A Dachshund is also not suited if you have kids in the household as it has the tendency to bite a kid if it doesn’t know him/her.
Breed Ownership Information :The Dachshund is one of the most well loved dogs in the United States.  It can thrive fine in apartment living.  Remember that a Dachshund puppy requires companionship so it wouldn’t do well with an owner who is always away.  Leaving it alone often would make it anxious and would have it resort to chewing any object in the house.
Breed Activity Information :

Dachshunds are among the really playful dog breeds and love the activity of play catching best.  They are however not in need of a lot of exercise.  In fact, taking it on short walks would be enough.  Take note that a Dachshund gets tired quickly therefore vigorous exercises are a no-no.  Dachshunds are also prone to having back issues so running or jumping (high) are not recommended.

Breed Care Information :Because the Dachshund has a very weak back and is prone to developing IVDD (inter vertebral disk disease), climbing the stairs as well as jumping is definitely a no no.  Instead, it should just take the elevator.  Other health issues common to Dachshunds would be deafness, blindness, etc.
Breed Training Information :  Dachshunds are stubborn pets but resorting to harsh training methods would not work as Dachshunds have feelings that are easily hurt.
