The Belgian Shepherd Malinois breed, which are not considered to be part of the small dogs, are well known in Belgium. This particular dog breed got its name from the city of Malines in Belgium where it has originated. It is one of the varieties of the Belgian sheepdog, but it is most commonly used as a watchdog. It could also be a good family companion if it is well trained on that part. Typically, this dog breed could live up to 12 to 14 years and has 6-10 puppies on the average.  

Breed Character Information : The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is one of the varieties of Belgian Sheepdogs, and so, it manifests similar character with the other three. They are hard working dog breeds and also obedient ones. Dogs under this breed are also loyal and caring to their masters and they could go along well with other animals. They are lively, active and playful animals.  
Breed Coat Information :     Belgian Shepherd Malinois have shorter hair coat than the other sheepdogs. The color of its coat ranges from mahogany to black and involves black tips. There are also some Malinois that have white coat in the chest and feet. Generally, Malinois are short-haired, however, the hair in the neck is longer than the others.
Breed Temperament Information : Belgian Shepherd Malinois is protective and sensitive with its territory. Although it is good and goes well with people and other animals, it could be very dangerous when it feels threatened. Malinois is also smart and bonds well with its master. Owning a Belgian Shepherd Malinois dog breed requires great knowledge about the breed. It is also recommended to purchase the Malinois when it is still a puppy so that you have enough time to look out and train for it. It is okay for Malinois to live in apartments, although it prefers spacious and cool places.  

Breed Activity Information :  Belgian Sgepherd Malinois are versatile and highly intelligent. And so, they are perfectly suited in activities such as tracking, walking, ball games, schutzhund, bomb detection, rescues, as well as herding. Daily walking is also a great exercise activity that this breed needs.
Breed Care Information :  Taking care of the Malinois well is needed. Although it does not have any major problem, it still could experience minor problems such as skin allergies, excessive shyness or aggressiveness, eye problems and dysplasia. Proper grooming would also be necessary to maintain the Malinois coat. Regular brushing and bathing will do, however, it sheds hair constantly.
Breed Training Information :  Just like other dog breeds, the best time to train the Malinois is when it is still a puppy. This would be very effective in enhancing its loyalty and relationship with its owner, as well with other people. However, harsh trainings do not work well with it. Also, they should be trained socially, not just physically.
