Breed Overview Information :Basenji origin is from Africa. There it was first developed as a hunting dog. The basenji is a sight hound, which hunts using its sight only. These small dogs have a very good and strong hunting instinct giving it the ability to chase after anything and everything even cars. Its name is pronounced as buh-sen-jee. Another thing they are best known is there bark, they do not have one. But they do have an interesting yodel and wail when they are hunting or when they have the feeling of excitement
Breed Character Information :

The Basenji is a somewhat suspicious breed since it can aloof with strangers. These small dogs are intelligent but dependent making its owners have a hard time in training them. Like most dog breeds, these small dogs are alert and aware. The Basenji is rambunctious and playful making themselves a very lovely type of family pets. These small dogs love playing outdoors and does well with acreage.

Breed Coat Information :  The Basenji’s coat is short in length, which requires less grooming. These small dogs have a fine, somewhat harsh, and short hair. Its hair is not too coarse and not silky. Like few dog breeds, it somewhat tends to clean itself making its coat clean and making the coat very easy to clean and take care of.  Unlike other dog breeds, it has no or little dog odor. These small dogs shed very little.
Breed Temperament Information :As said before, these kind of small dogs are very aware and alert. It is a fun loving happy go lucky pet but is not recommended for a first time owner or for an inexperienced dog owner. It has a tendency of being destructive but it only happens when the Basenji is left alone for a long time so it needs a proper training and exercise will be needed. The basenji, even as a puppy, is patient and get along pretty well with children. It has the tendency to fight with other small dogs if it is not socialized with other dogs early.
Breed Ownership Information :

This breed is good for families even with families with young children. Its fun loving, happy go lucky, and happy personality is best for families. Though it is not considered for families that would rely to a Basenji solely for its protection for it does not bark and it does aloof with people they do not know or even strangers. If they are not bred with the family or if the basenji is not a puppy anymore, it is not recommended with families with other dogs for it fights with other small dogs they have not grown up with. It is also not recommended for first time dog owners and inexperienced ones.

Breed Activity Information : 

Since the basenji is so energetic, it requires a little bit of exercise. It needs daily walks for these small dogs have so much energy and can be tireless. Since it was bred for hunting, it has a huge amount of stamina ad would do best in a fenced area for it to run around in. The fence should be high and planted deep for the basenji has the tendency to be an escape artist.

Breed Care Information :Like few dog breeds and cats, the Basenji is clean and grooms itself occasionally. These kind of small dogs sheds only a little to none. If you want its coat to stay the same as it was, grooming is a must and is done occasionally. Brushing its coat with a firm bristle or wire brush does well in removing loose or dead hair from its coat. The smooth coat of these kinds of small dogs is very easy to take care of.
Breed Training Information : 

The Basenji, especially when it is still a puppy, needs to be socialized so as to prevent its destructive nature and for it to do well with children and other dogs. Like most dog breeds, obedience training is needed for its alert and energetic nature. Many training methods are recommended to have its attention. These kinds of dog breeds become bored quickly. Consistency, variety, and firm training are best done with training for a Basenji.
