| Breed Overview Information : | The American Hairless Terrier was first discovered and developed by Willie and Edwin Scott. They had a litter of Rat Terriers wherein one female was completely hairless. This hairless Rat Terrier became their prized pet. The Scotts started to breed this hairless female whom they called Josephine to produce more hairless Rat Terriers. The first few trials were highly unsuccessful since Josephine was only able to produce one hairless Rat Terrier like her. However, as time progressed, she was able to produce two hairless Rat Terriers: one male and one female. These hairless puppies were used to start a breeding program in able to produce and start a new breed which they called the American Hairless Terrier. Though a relatively new breed, the American Hairless Terrier is continuously being developed so that it retains the personality of a Rat Terrier as well as its unique hairless trait. |
| Breed Character Information : | American Hairless Terriers are very intelligent and playful. They are generally friendly with children especially with those they have known as a puppy. They make good watch dogs but are generally welcoming to strangers unless provoked or necessary to protect their owners. This breed, unlike other dog breeds, is not noisy and will not bark unless necessary. They are also very easy to train since they are eager to please their owners. |
| Breed Coat Information : | American Hairless Terriers have pink skin with spots that may be black, red or grey. An American Hairless Terrier, as a puppy, will have some hair all over its body. As it ages, it starts to lose its hair. By six weeks of age, the American Hairless Terrier will become completely hairless. Since this is a hairless breed, it is very sensitive to the sun. Thus, they should never be exposed to the sun for a very long time. This breed is perfect for those with asthma or allergies to dogs since they do not shed any hair unlike other dog breeds. |
