Breed Overview Information :The American Foxhound was developed from English and French hounds that were brought to the United States. They were originally used to hunt Indians. As time progressed, they were eventually utilized as hunters of wild game due to their keen sense of smell and their incredible agility. The American Foxhound was never bred solely to be a pet. They were usually owned by aristocratic and wealthy families who enjoyed fox hunting. Now, they are not only hunters, but they are also watch dogs and companions.

The American Foxhound is an excellent hunter of wild game. They have a keen sense of smile and great stamina and agility. When hunting, it displays impressive courage, even taking on animals bigger than it. This breed is affectionate and loyal to its owners and usually does well with other animals and children. They are not suited as house pets since they have been conditioned to be outdoors hunting for wild game. They have a tendency to be protective of their family and property although this is not always the case depending on how they were trained and treated as a puppy.
