| Breed Overview Information : | The Akbash originated in Turkey approximately 3000 years ago. This breed was utilized by shepherds as cattle guardians probably due to their white color which distinguished them from predators. Due to its pure white color, it was called Akbash, from the Turkish word “akbas” or white head. Though I was introduced in the United States more than 30 years ago, it remains a rare breed. |
| Breed Character Information : | The Akbash is very loyal and protective of its owner. It also takes its guarding duties seriously and will not hesitate to risk its life to protect its family. The Akbash possesses courage and strength that will make other dog breeds envious. They are unafraid to take on bigger animals such as coyotes or bears. It is also very intelligent and headstrong and will sometimes act even without a command from its owner during emergencies. |
| Breed Coat Information : | The Akbash has a white double coat which helps it resist all types of weather. Its under coat is soft and dense while the outer coat is harsh to the touch and long. Its coat’s length may be medium or long. Whatever the length may be, the Akbash’s coat should never be curly. The Akbash’s coat is relatively clean, with little to no odor. This breed may not be suited for asthma sufferers since they shed more than the average amount as compared to other dog breeds. |
| Breed Temperament Information : | The Akbash has a tendency to be aggressive or combative toward other dog breeds since they are very dominant. They are excellent guard dogs since they are naturally suspicious of strangers. Due to their natural herding and guarding instincts, they are unsuited for households with infants or toddlers since they have a tendency to nip at people’s heels. This breed is not recommended for first time dog owners or inexperienced trainers since they may be quite difficult to train since they will sometimes think twice before following any command. |
| Breed Ownership Information : | The Akbash is rare and hard to obtain. If you are fortunate enough to have acquired one, then, you should read on Akbash dog breed information’s to determine if this is the right breed for you. Take note that the Akbash is not suited for first time dog owners, asthma sufferers, households with infants or toddlers and cramped spaces. |
| Breed Activity Information : | Since the Akbash is a natural worker, it likes having a job to do. This breed should be given daily walks and carefree runs in a wide, secured area to keep it from becoming idle. Keeping it idle for a very long time will result to the development of disruptive behaviors. The Akbash does not do well in apartments or cramped spaces unlike other dog breeds. They do best in open areas, usually in a rural setting. |
| Breed Care Information : | The Akbash’s coat should be regularly brushed and groomed to remove loose hair. To keep its coat in top shape, it should only be given a bath when necessary. It is prone to hip dysplasia and OCD. |
| Breed Training Information : | As a puppy, the Akbash should already be given proper training and socialization. This breed must be handled by an experienced trainer since they will sometimes think twice before following any command. |
